Some friends and I went to a local Indian restaurant called the 'Essence of India'. It was my first time at an Indian restaurant, although not my first time eating Indian food, but still it was a new experience. They first served us lentil soup, followed by delicious warm Naan bread, which is a light and fluffy authentic Indian bread baked in a clay oven. (As a side note, lately I have been buying a whole wheat version of this Naan bread, and eating it with soups and salads. It is not particularly low in fat; typically when you buy it it comes in a pack of 2, and 1 Naan bread has 10 grams of fat. Therefore, I typically only eat half of it at a time, or even just a quarter at a time).
For my main course, I ordered a vegetarian dish called Aloo Mattar, which consisted of potatoes cooked with green peas with fresh herbs and spices. It was definitely two things: spicy and delicious. Next time I eat at this or any other Indian restaurant, it is probably what I would get again.
However, I learned from what my friend ordered to avoid things 'cooked in spinach'. It's just too much. She ordered Palak Chole, which is chick peas delicately cooked in spinach with herbs and spices, but the taste was overwhelmingly that of condensed, cooked spinach and was not very good.
Another of my friends ordered the traditional Mattar Paneer dish, which is always delicious and consists of homemade cheese cubes cooked with fresh peas in a curry sauce.
After all of this amazing food, we were also given dessert. The dessert of the day was Gulab Jamun. It was quite interesting and none of us really enjoyed it. It is basically fried balls of mixed pastry soaked in rose, saffron, and cardamom flavored honey syrup, and it tasted overwhelmingly of rose water. It was a very odd dessert, but an experience at least.
My plate looks kind of empty, but that's just because I didn't think to take a picture until I was nearing the end of the meal!
Overall I would say that eating at this restaurant was a great experience, and I would definitely eat there again. I love Indian food, and this place offered a great deal- only $7.99 for all of that food during lunch! However at dinner it is quite a bit more expensive.
