Making Sushi!

The other night a friend of mine and I learned how to make sushi! It was surprisingly easy and lots of fun. Earlier in the day, her boyfriend had gone out and boughten a ton of fresh seafood from a local market, including salmon, tuna, crab and shrimp. We decided what else we wanted to put in the various sushi rolls, so we picked out avocado, cucumber, asparagus, cream cheese, wasabi, zucchini, carrots, & radishes. We also bought "roasted seaweed" paper, called nori, & sushi rice (which is short grain rice).
First you cook the rice, and then place the rice on half of the seaweed paper, which is placed on top of plastic wrap (just mash the rice down to fill up the whole bottom half of the paper). The rice is very sticky so always keep your hands wet when touching (we kept a water cup to dip our fingers in). Once that task is complete, you turn the rice side of the seaweed paper to the top, then flip the paper over.
Next, fill up the bottom half of the seaweed paper with whatever ingredients you want to add:
Then it's time to roll it up! Slowly roll up the contents, starting from the bottom. Use the plastic wrap to assist in rolling the rice part of the roll, and then cut the fresh sushi roll into 6 pieces. That's all there is to it! :)

Get creative with it!
We ended up making wayy too much, but sushi is stored pretty easily so they got to save the rest and have another sushi meal :) After my learning experience, I understand why it sometimes takes sushi chefs a few minutes to make rolls, especially if they are more complicated. I also now understand why sushi tends to be pricy- all that seafood and sushi rice can get expensive.
